Two ten-year-olds on a class trip to the Erie Canal find themselves transported back in time to the canal of 1829. Dragged aboard a canal boat, the boy and girl experience adventures getting through each day by blending into its tempo and chores while trying to find a way back to the present.

The author imparts an enormous amount of detail about the canal through the story-line, and his colorful characterization brings the story to life boldly.
