Lacey was determined to protect her grandmother from the gang and the drug dealers roaming their neighborhood. Every day she had to use her wits to outsmart them. But, after she received a hundred dollar bill in the mail, she became afraid, really afraid. She knew the mysterious money wasn’t from her mother, or her father, they had abandoned her years ago.
Abuela had cared for her since she was three years old. She would save the money to use for her grandmother’s needs. But, how could she keep it a secret? How could she keep it from being stolen? With the help of those she can trust in her scheme, Lacey cooks up a plot with a twist that her worst enemy finally falls for hook, line and sinker. But carrying out the plot is dangerous and knife-play is not ruled out. She is even more shaky and cautious about solitary or dimly lit places.
Along the way to the happy resolution, Lacey discovers who her benefactor is and that he would like to be a permanent part of her life, if she will let him. But she misreads his
offer and thinks that Abuela will be left behind, and so she refuses the good life for herself. However, once she understands that her good fortune is also her grandmother’s good fortune, the novel quickly reaches a happy resolution.

Mary C. Crawford is a well-known author, and an active member in the California writing community. She has authored The Racehorse Caper and Mystery At Witch Creek
