The boys share an interest in astronomy. While setting up and focusing their telescopes in Allie's backyard, they inadvertently sweep over Kelly's house and witness her fathermanhandling her. Later, Kelly acts as though nothing happened, but the boys talk with Allie's father and report what they saw to the police, who they believe will handle Kelly's father. Allie is determined to “fit in” with the SEARCH kids, and works on and tries out a vari-ety of “acceptable” behaviors. He puts his charades aside when Kelly arrives in class, bruised. Allie and Pete determine that they have to keep her out of her father's angry path. The plan is to interest her in astronomy and nightly star gazing with them. But, when Kelly does not respond to this maneuver, Allie connives to infiltrate himself into Kelly's home as her math tutor. This plan backfires: Kelly's father removes her from the SEARCH program because her grades are suffering. Unable to help Kelly himself, and depressed that he has to depend on adults who do not fully understand, and feeling alienated from his SEARCH peers, Allie anticipates spend-ing a weekend with his high-profile, TV anchorwoman and celebrity mom. All dressed up, they attend a symphony benefit-and appear on television. Now his SEARCH classmates are impressed. After he arranges a class field trip to the TV station and an interview with his mom, the SEARCH class is totally captivated and Allie is “in.” Allie slowly settles into being himself, valuing himself, and understanding that the others are also searching for group acceptance. Finally, all appears right in Allie's world, until he discovers a bruised Kelly in school one day. However, now he is able to activate the adult action-line. He talks to his teacher, who imme-diately involves the school nurse, who moves the case into the hands of social workers. Soon, Kelly and her mother move away to live with her aunt, and Kelly's house is sold. In an outreaching act of kindness, Allie writes to Kelly to tell her that although she is far away, she is still in his thoughts as a friend. He hopes that she will write to him.
