Sports and athletics are so often seen as predominately male activities. Although girls and women are becoming more involved, there are still those who have not had the female role models they need in order to have positive examples in all dimensions of sports and athletics. This book aims to provide girls with inspiration, and information, to encourage them to participate, and eventually to excel in sports.
It includes: all types of sports; girls and young women in an Athletics Timeline; profiles of famous female athletes; inspiring quotations; there is space for a girl's own journal and dozens of references, books and websites.
Dr Frances Karnes is professor in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education and Director of the Frances A. Karnes Center for Gifted Studies at The University of Southern Mississippi where she has been a member of the faculty since 1973. Director of the Leadership Studies Program at USM, she is widely known for her research, publications, innovative program developments and service activities in gifted education and leadership training. Dr Kristen Stephens is Support Services Coordinator for Duke University's Talent Identification Program and Adjunct Assistant Professor in Programs in Education at Duke University.
