The first practical solution to the need for peer identification proven—in extensive statistical reviews—to be effective in locating gifted children in the elementary grades. Student booklets allow the children to tell the cartoon Muffs which of their peers would make the best banker, would create the best egg-cracker machine, would be the best play director, etc. Instructions for administration of the instrument, a scoring form, a summary of the research findings, and 30 student booklets are included.
A major study of the results of using the Muff instrument has shown that peer nomination was a remarkably accurate indicator. In a study of third and fourth graders, the students had perceptions of their peers which differed from those of their teachers but which were supported by other criteria. The use of peer nomination increased the number of candidates who qualified for the gifted program in the test district, and it revealed that students with superior intellectual potential were being excluded
Packet includes 30 student answer booklets, instructions for the identification administrator with a score sheet, and a short discussion of the findings of using the instrument with third and fourth graders.
