"A hilarious, must-read book for anyone who has children or has ever been a child." Sheila Moss, humor columnist

"I got the book today and couldn't put it down. I ABSOLUTELY loved it!" Cathy Gregor, humor columnist

"This is the very best kind of humor, the kind that conveys a little wisdom and causes a short pause to ponder." Capt. Ed Owen, author of This Is Your Captain Speaking

"On Being Dad" is the long-awaited first book by journalist Jason Offutt. It contains everything you'll need to know about being a successful parent. Uh, well, maybe not…

It is an enticing collection of warm, offbeat and funny stories about family life…viewed from the perspective of a caring but frequently overwhelmed dad.

It is full of hints and rules that he has learnt by experience and here passes on for the benefit of unsuspecting would-be dads or at least fellow-sufferers: being a dad of a small daughter is not like being a dad to a son; say ‘yes’ to everything your pregnant wife asks or wants; grandparents have their own rules; dads can never win; poop is funny, and is usually normal.

Jason Offutt is married to his harshest critic Kim Offutt and they live in Orrick, Missouri with their three children - Tawney, 16, Hayden, 9, and Sam, who's not old enough to have a year attached to him. Tawney likes sports and '70s rock. Sam likes to eat, sleep and poop. Hayden likes to pretend he's a super hero. And, so does Jason.

Jason Offutt's humor column "As I was saying..." has appeared irregularly in 10 newspapers and magazines in Missouri and Kansas since 1992, winning awards such as "Best Humor Column" and "Humor Columnist of the Month." He is now teaching journalism at Northwest Missouri State University.
