The Bully Frog Prevention Program
Bully Frog Teaching Stories
Bullying is a world-wide phenomenon. One third of all children in the United States – more than 5.7 million – are estimated to be involved in bullying as bullies, targets of bullies, or both.
The Bully Frog Program is a national bullying prevention program named for the award-winning children’s book on bullying prevention.
- The uniqueness of Bully Frog is that it begins in nursery school and continues through 8th grade.
- For the past 10 years, Bully Frog has been presented to over 250,000 students nationwide.
These are important stories that will enlighten youngsters at their most impressionable age. Set in Leapfrog Elementary School, they are simply told, with many class activities on separate cards in the teacher packages. Bully Frog addresses issues of bullying from four points of view: the victims, the onlookers, the school, and the bully (who needs to be repatriated into the group and able to channel his strengths productively). Forlorn Frog's Valentine's Day teaches the meaning of empathy with the students learning to care for one another's feelings.
Bully Frog was a winner in the 2004 Legacy Book Awards for outstanding books, from the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented.
The authors, Roni Benson and Ginger Lieberman, are authorities on preventing youth violence. They are co-directors of LIPEN, a Professional Education Network, in New York. They have been conducting workshops for school staff, students and parents for the past 15 years. Their newest workshop is on Cyberbullying and Internet Safety. Bully Frog is the story of young frogs in the town of Lily Pond during their first days of school in Leapfrog Elementary School. Bully Frog wreaks havoc on the lives of two youngsters and soon the adults step in to help remedy the situation. But it is basically the students who must solve the problem by becoming pro-active about caring, acting responsibly and being inclusive.
Typical youngsters are represented: Fitness Frog, Foreign Frog, Friendly Frog, Brainy Frog, Fraidy Frog, Fabulous Frog and of course Billy Frog (a.k.a. Bully Frog.) Helping adults are Mr. Toad the teacher, Fraidy Frog's mother, Principal Frogmum, and Nurse Feelwell.
