Problem-Based Learning Units by Shelagh Gallagher
Problem-Based Learning immerses students in real-world, complex situations in order to learn core curriculum. Whilst searching for a solution, students simultaneously learn content and improve their skills in research, higher-order thinking, decision-making and more. It is particularly useful in secondary gifted education, providing challenging and interesting projects in depth.
The latest books (November 2012) in this series are for middle school: Ferret It Out, the first science unit, about a current endangered species; A Final Appeal about a court case concerning free speech and a banned book earlier this century, and Hull House: Living Democracy in the Progressive Era set in Chicago, Illinois about funding problems that beset the first Settlement House in America.
Also for middle school, Black Death goes back to Medieval Europe, where students have to consider some life or death situations. At the higher level: Excluded! Chinese Immigration to the United States, and All Work and No Play, a consideration of the issues around child labor during the Progressive Era.
For each unit, there is a Resource Book of original papers, speeches and photographs of the period and a Problem Log in which each student records their work. The Teacher Manual describes how to conduct the project; how to develop problem-solving skills and awareness; how to lead students into considering all sides of a real-life historical situation, the legislation and the consequences....consequences that resonate and are relevant to today's sociological problems.
Dr. Shelagh A. Gallagher is a nationally recognized expert in gifted education and in Problem-Based Learning. She has received the National Association for Gifted Children award for Article of the Year and is a four- time winner of the NAGC Curriculum Division award for exemplary curriculum. She is available for workshops and presentations. You can access her downloads here.

This is an explanation and a practical guide to implementing problem based learning. A useful background guide to the PBL Units which aim to help students in critical thinking, problem solving and communication.
Dr Gallagher writes: Gone are the days when memorizing facts like a quiz kid was sufficient to be expert, or even competent. Skills valued in the modern workforce include critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and self-direction, in addition to adapt- ability and technology literacy. Workers must be able to assimilate new information and new ideas quickly, discerning which information is valuable and credible and seeing its relationship to other information. They also must be able to collaborate with others, forming groups with interlocking areas of expertise.and self-direction, in addition to adapt- ability and technology literacy. This Problem-Based Learning unit for middle school immerses students in the study of the Progressive Era through a specific problem faced by the Board of Directors of the Hull House in Chicago, the landmark Settlement house.
Jane Addams, Hull House co-founder, has lobbied for labor reform and as a result a prominent Chicagoan has threatened to withdraw financial support. Hull House had been planning to start programs to improve health, advocate for better working conditions, provide educational programs, support better juvenile justice, and improve housing. Now there is funding available for only one of their projects.
Students, as the Board of Directors, must decide which project to fund. As they consider their options, students of Hull House learn about the living and working conditions of America’s immigrant poor during the Progressive Era through the study of primary resources, letters, cartoons and newspaper articles (many provided in the Resource Book). Using guided discussions and graphic organizers in the Teacher Manual, they synthesize this information as they compare the consequences of a variety of social ills. In doing so they will uncover underlying issues and prejudices and discover the inequities of the time.
An optional kicker, or twist in the story, introduces an interdisciplinary connection through The Jungle by Upton Sinclair.
Hull House was pilot-tested in several sixth grade classrooms throughout Fairfax County, Virginia. The unit is aligned to national and regional middle school social studies objectives An Appendix details the alignment of Hull House to National Standards Documents, including US History Content Standards for Grades 5-12; National Council for Social Studies Teaching Standards; Common Core Reading Standards for Literacy /Social Studies; Common Core Writing Standards; National Center for History in the Schools.
Dr Gallagher provides extensive guidance on how to implement and assess performance in the Teacherl Manual, and in the video presentation above she gives a 'walk through' the Unit showing exactly what you will be teaching and how.
The Unit was awarded the National Association of Gifted Children's Curriculum Award in November 2012.
Winner of the NAGC Curriculum Award, 2012.
