The purpose of these plays is not to replace the Shakespearean classics. Rather, their intention is to stimulate interest in the original work, to provide students with something fun to read and stage along with the original, something which will lead to lively discussion and understanding.

Each of the plays takes place in typical teenage or high school settings: basketball games, after school jobs, the classroom. Each deals with typical teenage problems: acceptance, romance, pressure. Their themes and motifs, despite coming 400 years later, are identical to those of Shakespeare’s greatest works, and herein lies their greatest value.

While field testing the program, the author watched students work through these plays before reading Shakespeare, concurrently while reading Shakespeare, and after reading Shakespeare. In each case, they proved to be far more popular than the original and in each case the teacher attested to the fact that the plays made student understanding of themes, symbols, characters, and figures of speech in the original far more interesting to teach.

The Teacher’s Guide covers all five plays, giving each one individual attention. Pre-read discussion questions, essay and discussion questions, literary analysis questions, and questions which require comparison to the origi-nal provide the teacher with ready-made lesson plans for an entire unit. There is a play booklet for each play.
