It’s back-to-school season, and we’re ready to kick off another year of exemplary learning in the Royal Fireworks Online Learning Community’s science department!
We have six exciting science courses that begin this week, taught by esteemed instructors Dr. Kristin Krause and Dr. David Purvis.
🧬 Human Biology with Dr. Kristin Krause
Student Ages: 11-14
Class Meetings: Wednesdays, 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Dates: August 23 – December 13
Cost: $475 (~$31/week)
Description: Uncover the intricate world of cells, tissues, and organ systems such as digestion and circulation. Discover the significance of maintaining balance (homeostasis) and the impact of lifestyle choices on health and wellness.
🧠 Understanding the Brain with Dr. Kristin Krause
Student Ages: 11-13
Class Meetings: Wednesdays, 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time

Description: Delve into the foundation of neurons, glia, and their electrical signaling. Progress to understanding the spinal cord and ultimately the brain itself. Understand how our senses interact with the brain, influencing responses ranging from laughter to sleep. Encounter remarkable scientists, exceptional individuals, and intriguing creatures along this illuminating journey. This course offers a unique opportunity to decipher the complexity of the brain’s role in intelligence, emotion, learning, and memory.
🌿 Ecology and Evolution with Dr. Kristin Krause
Student Ages: 11-14
Class Meetings: Wednesdays, 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Dates: August 23 – December 13

Description: Discover how interactions among organisms and their environments drive change, a process known as natural selection that has led to the incredible diversity of life we see today. Learn about how changes to one component of an ecological system can affect other components. Find out where life came from, do some citizen science, and discuss how we might terraform Mars someday.
🦠 Microbiology with Dr. David Purvis
Student Ages: 12-16
Class Meetings: Thursdays, 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Dates: September 7 – December 14*

Description: Explore the hidden world of microbiology and its impact on life. Survey the six kingdoms of life, delve into cell structures, and study microorganisms ranging from fungi to bacteria. Understand viruses’ unique properties, including their life cycles, and examine their medical implications, with a focus on flu, cold, and coronaviruses.

Student Ages: 11-14
Class Meetings: Tuesdays, 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Dates: August 22 – December 5
Cost: $475.00 (~$32/week)
Description: Journey through atoms, molecules, elements, and chemical bonds, advancing to explore the periodic table, metal properties, and nonmetal characteristics. Investigate chemical changes, reactions, and equations, with practical application in solution chemistry. Encounter scientific methodology, measurement techniques, and inquiry-based science alongside captivating demonstrations.
