The Spanish explorers in the New World believed that the American Southwest was filled with gold, and they sent expeditions there to try to find it. Cabeza de Vaca was among those who went to explore and settle the land along the Gulf of Mexico, but the group ran into so much bad luck that they named the Texas island where they ended up Malhado—Bad Luck Island. Cabeza, however, was a man who knew how to turn his luck around through incredible patience and sheer force of will.
