Captain John Smith arrived in the New World in 1607 as a prisoner in chains. The men he’d set sail with thought he wanted to take over as leader, and they didn’t appreciate his challenges to their authority. But John was smart and a hard worker, and those same men soon learned that they needed his help to establish their new colony of Jamestown.
