Description

The Problemoids Grade 5 Math Challenge book engages children in high-level thinking about challenging mathematics, mathematical reasoning, and general logic problems by focusing on developing and using problem-solving strategies, not on memorization or operations. It contains 50 problems, which get increasingly difficult as children progress through the book. Each problem contains up to four hints for solving it. The hints contain one or more of several problem-solving strategies designed to help children figure out the steps necessary to arrive at a solution. However, most of the problems can be solved in a variety of ways, and children are encouraged to use the strategies that work best for them.

The topics covered include sets, numbers and numeration, operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and probability and statistics. The focus is heavily on mathematical reasoning.

The Math Challenge book is the student book; the Math Mentor book is the instructor manual, which contains the answers to all of the questions and explanations for solving them. Problemoids will challenge children while providing them with opportunities to build their problem-solving skills—skills that they can apply in a variety of both academic and real-world contexts.
