Description

The clustering approach is a method of essay writing for students who struggle with their writing skills. Using a simple formula, students can learn to map out the essential points in an essay question and then use those points to create a series of paragraphs, including an introduction and a conclusion, that will construct an essay to answer the question fully.

This is an integrated, visual approach to essay writing. It uses boxes and line connectors to map out essay content in a step-by-step progression. The approach is designed to focus students on pertinent information to use in answering essay questions, which require facts to prove or disprove a point or support a premise or theme. It is particularly useful for those students who are having difficulty working with traditional outlining. Several student samples serve as additional study models. For students who labor over the essay portions of English or social studies tests, this approach offers much-needed help.

There is a version of this book that is directed toward instructors. The focus of that book is on how to write effective essay questions so that students can use the clustering approach when writing their essays. (See below.)
