THIS IS A ONE-SEMESTER COURSE.

If jabberwocks are all bandersnatches, and if no bandersnatches eat jam, then do jabberwocks eat jam?

This course introduces classical logic in the spirit of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. With no prior experience required, students will learn the foundations of classical logic, including categorical syllogisms and basic propositional logic. Weekly exercises will draw from a range of literary and fantasy-themed scenarios that require students to identify, formulate, and analyze logical forms. Students will solve puzzles and encounter paradoxes, all while learning the strengths and weaknesses of different logical systems.

Dates: September 2 – December 16, 2025

Student Expectations: Students will complete weekly logic exercises and occasional short readings by Lewis Carroll.

Student Support: The instructor is available by email.

Feedback/Assessment: Students will be assigned weekly graded exercises and will receive detailed feedback on errors and successes.

Materials/Supplies: The instructor will supply all materials, including short readings.
