Introduction to Latin, Part II
- Instructor Dr. Frances R. Spielhagen
- Code LAT84
- Student Ages 8-13
THIS IS A ONE-SEMESTER COURSE.
This course is an extension of “Introduction to Latin, Part I,” although students who have a basic understanding of Latin do not need to have completed Part I before enrolling in this course. The course will introduce the basics of the Latin language through the Royal Fireworks series Fabulae Caeciliae. In this course, students will gain a basic understanding of Latin through reading simple narratives. This will enable them to build a scaffold for further study in Latin. Students will encounter ancient Roman culture and history through the narratives, photos, and illustrations. As a bonus, they will enhance their English vocabulary through the Latin vocabulary they learn.
Live Classes: Thursdays, 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. There will not be a live class every week. The live classes will be supplemented by independent study weeks.
Student Expectations: Students will engage in reading and discussing the narratives contained in the text. They will have weekly assignments related to those readings. They will also be expected to respond verbally and in writing to questions from the instructor.
Student Support: The instructor is available by email.
Feedback/Assessment: Feedback will be provided on weekly assignments and projects. Grade recommendations are optional.
Prerequisites: Students should have completed “Introduction to Latin, Part I” or have comparable knowledge of Latin.
Materials/Supplies: Students will need to purchase the book Caecilia et Verus in Foro Romano. Alternatively, they can use Casus Fabulae Romanae I, which is in the format of a graphic novel and contains the text of Caecilia et Verus in Foro Romano, as well as the book that comes before it in the series.
