MCT Language Arts Level 6: The Lens II Level
- Instructor Michael Clay Thompson
- Code MCTLV6
- Student Ages 11-18
THIS IS A TWO-SEMESTER COURSE.
The sixth level of the MCT language arts curriculum offers a high level of challenge. Using the strategies explained in Advanced Academic Writing II, Michael Clay Thompson teaches the students how to write academic essays, complete with citations and works cited. The grammar book, The Magic Lens II, explores the intricacies of how the English language is constructed through grammar. There are hundreds of stems in The Word Within the Word II that will enable students to understand words that they have never before encountered; there is also an engaging discussion of the development of the ancient Roman Republic. The poetics strand is both an important and a fun part of the curriculum; Poetry, Plato, and the Problem of Beauty takes children on an extraordinary exploration of Plato’s aesthetics and how the great poets interpreted his ideas of beauty. During the second semester, Michael will add the Fog Trilogy of literary novels to the curriculum.
As with all of the levels, the students in Michael’s online courses will get a good deal more in the way of images and explication than those who simply use the texts.
Live Classes: Tuesdays at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time
There will not be a live class every week. The core of the course is the assignments and the extensive feedback given by Michael, with the live class being a voluntary enrichment for students who are able to attend. Students’ attendance of the live classes has no effect on their grades. Students unable to attend a live class will be able to access a recording of the class.
Student Support: Michael is available via email.
Feedback/Assessment: Michael may reply to students’ answers with comments or questions, and he will want them to answer those emails.
Materials/Supplies: Students will need the Level 6 texts: The Magic Lens II; 4Practice II; The Word Within the Word II; Advanced Academic Writing II; and Poetry, Plato, and the Problem of Beauty; as well as the Fog Trilogy novels: The War of the Worlds, The Red Badge of Courage, and Kidnapped.
There are two alternatives to taking the live-class version of this course. The first is to have the child audit the course. Children who are auditing the course will be able to watch a recording of the live class each week, but they will not be able to attend the live classes nor have their work graded. The second alternative is to have the child audit the course with assignments graded by an instructor chosen by Michael Clay Thompson. Both alternatives offer children the chance to experience Michael’s teaching but at a discounted rate.
