Problem-Based Learning: Fit to Print: A Problem about Yellow Journalism and the Road to War with Spain

Using the Problem-Based Learning Unit Fit to Print, this course will focus on “yellow journalism” and the power of public opinion during the 1890s. As editors of the struggling New York Times, students must compete with the attention-grabbing headlines of the New York Journal by writing fact-based articles that uphold journalistic integrity. The students must collaborate ideas and decide which stories deserve the most attention.

The backdrop of the course revolves around the events taking place in Cuba in 1898 and the unfolding situation between the United States and Spain. Students will explore both the Spanish-American War and how the news was used to influence public opinion in the U.S. They will work together to decide which news articles to write and how to present them. As they do, they will examine the events during that time period and learn about the historical significance of reporting accurate information and the implications of misinformation on a publication’s readership.

Live Classes: Wednesdays, 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time, from June 9th to July 28th
