Summer Book Club: Mythology-Inspired Adventures (June 8, 15, 22, 29)

  • Instructor Ingrid Klass
  • Code RB72W
  • Student Ages 9-12
  • Term Summer Workshops

Do you like books that blend adventure, humor, and mythology? Join the Summer Book Club for a series of fun and friendly conversations about three novels inspired by the legends and histories of different world cultures.

After our initial meeting, we’ll talk about a different book each week, thinking about the questions that each novel generates. We’ll discuss plots and themes, the mythological and historical links within each story, and our opinions of the characters’ choices. Online, the classroom will have optional additional resources about each novel, forums to discuss your favorite books, and more.

The books we’ll be reading this summer are:

  • The Wizard Children of Finn by Mary Tannen—inspired by Irish history and mythology
  • Sal & Gabi Break the Universe by Carlos Hernandez—blending magical realism and Cuban-American culture
  • Amira & Hamza: The War to Save the Worlds by Samira Ahmed—inspired by Middle Eastern history and legends

Live Classes: Thursdays at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, June 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th

Materials/Supplies: Each of the selected books is listed by the publisher as suitable for students ages 8-12 but is geared toward readers on the 9+ side of that range. Parents are encouraged to read about each book to make sure the content and length are right for their child. All of the books are available as eBooks and/or audiobooks. Students should finish each book in advance of the scheduled meeting.
