Michael Clay Thompson iBook Sets

Michael Clay Thompson iBook Sets Series Cover

As part of our aim to make the MCT language arts curriculum as widely available as possible, all of Michael Clay Thompson’s books have been made into iBooks, including the literature trilogies.

The iBooks offer extra features such as interactive exercises, audio clips of Michael Clay Thompson reading poems or important passages, and an array of extra photographs, all in gorgeous full color. These iBooks must be purchased individually from Apple's iTunes, but we are grouping them into sets here to make them easier to find.

Available to view on both Macs and iPads, these electronic versions are considerably less expensive than purchasing all of the print books for each level. Students can flip through a book by simply sliding a finger along the bottom of the screen. Highlighting text, taking notes, searching for content, and finding definitions in the glossary are just as easy. And with all their books on a single iPad, students will have no problem carrying them wherever they go.

The interactive quizzes in the student books replace much of those in the printed teacher manuals; the other materials for the instructor are present in a single implementation iBook for each level: grammar, vocabulary, writing, poetics, and practice. (Each literature trilogy has its own instructor manual.) You can see screenshots of the books in the descriptions on iTunes. Updates are automatic.

We have considered carefully how to provide the MCT experience in these iBooks, and we are committed to continual updating as we improve the curriculum for yet another generation of students to enjoy. They enhance the learning experience and provide a fun but rigorous introduction to English language arts.

Note: The prices listed in these sets are the prices for the iBooks; however, you must click on the iBook symbol to purchase the books from iTunes. (For the print versions, go to the Michael Clay Thompson Overview page.)

MCT Curriculum iBooks Level 1

Level 1, The Island Level, is the entry level for the Michael Clay Thompson language arts curriculum. Children are ready to begin this level as soon as they have passed the stage of learning to read and can read to learn. Parent and child (or children) can snuggle up on the sofa and read together. Many parents have found that the student books are wonderful points for children to begin the practice of reading on their own and then discussing the material.

One instructor manual serves the entire level. It is filled with Socratic questions to raise with the child, as well as activities and quizzes for assessment. Although the material is presented simply, it reaches a surprising level of complexity and sophistication.

MCT Level 1 (Mud) iBook Literature Trilogy with Implementation Manual

The Rescue at Fragment Crag, The Red Tide, and The Green-Face Virus by Michael Clay Thompson feature the characters he created in his language arts curriculum to help explain grammar and writing rules. Following requests for more about these characters, he decided that Mud the Fish should have a series of adventures of his own. The novels are described as classic word novels, designed to introduce young readers to the literary words Michael identified in his classic words vocabulary research. They are full-length books (around 100 pages each), exuberant, funny, and abounding in alliteration and other poetic techniques. Difficult words are defined at the bottom of each page. The books are illustrated with charming drawings.

Michael writes in the introduction, "These Mud novels are like training wheels for the classics, with big words, long length, complex characters, intricate plots, and big ideas, all in a magical world where little animals love sentences and stay loyal to each other."

The implementation manual includes a short essay by Michael about each novel, a list of strategies and activities for children to do, vocabulary words to study in advance of the readings, quotations for quote quizzes, and discussion questions.

Level 3, The Voyage Level, marks a significant step in creativity and in the demands of the writing portion of the curriculum. Children progress from learning how to write paragraphs in Paragraph Town to learning how to construct essays out of those paragraphs in Essay Voyage. It is here that many children truly begin to feel the rigor of the curriculum. In Grammar Voyage, children are expected to play with grammar in contexts that include poetry. Caesar’s English II has a good deal more emphasis on creativity than its predecessor. The poetics and practice strands continue to build on the texts from Level 2, increasing the knowlege that the children are acquiring.

MCT Curriculum iBooks Level 4

The classic literature level, which is the fourth level of the MCT language arts curriculum, contains books that focus on the grammar, vocabulary, writing, and poetic techniques of the great classics of English and American literature. It acts as a bridge between the elementary and secondary levels, but it is so rich in content that it is recommended even for students who have advanced beyond this level.

This level is based on Michael Clay Thompson’s decades-long research into the vocabulary of the classic English and American novels and the far-reaching database that grew out of it. This provides an unmatched, solid foundation for The Vocabulary of Literature. In the grammar book, The Grammar of Literature, Michael introduces the t-model, a new way of picturing sentences. In The Poetry of Literature, he shows how classic writers used poetic devices that helped to make their prose extraordinary. The Writing of Literature leads students through a sophisticated and often subtle exploration of the writing techniques the great authors used to make an indelible impression on their readers.

The literature level offers children—and their parents—a unique, in-depth look at some of the greatest works of literature available in the English language. It will impart an appreciation for the diligence and dedication of the authors of those works, revealing techniques that readers will look for in future books and will employ in their own writing as well.

MCT Curriculum iBooks Level 6

In Level 6, the grammar, vocabulary, and writing strands continue to increase in difficulty, building cumulatively on the previous level so that children are steadily reinforcing their knowledge while simultaneously expanding and deepening it. The largest step up is in the poetics book, where children are asked to consider the concept of beauty, particularly in the context of the works of Plato. Another new challenge is afforded by the practice book, which now contains sentences from the classics of English and American literature. Children who completed Level 5 will find this level challenging but rewarding; however, there is enough review that even children new to the program will be able to complete it.

Level 7 is the highest level of the MCT language arts curriculum. Building on the previous two levels, it takes children to the most advanced concepts in grammar, vocabulary, writing, and poetics. The writing book is particularly rigorous; the focus has shifted from the “hows” of writing to the “what” of the essay. The poetics book asks children to consider the concept of truth within the context of Plato's explorations of it. The practice book again offers children sentences from classic English and American authors. Children who complete this level will be well-prepared for the intellectual and academic demands of college and professional life.
