MCT Courses and Registration Form

Spring 2017 Semester

Michael Clay Thompson is expanding his online courses beginning in the new year, including new offerings of the Alice, Peter, and Mole Trilogy, Grammar Island, and The Word Within the Word, Volume I. There are now ten courses with a total of fourteen options available for students following his language arts curriculum. The opportunity for personal interaction with Michael makes these courses a special treat for any child.

Michael has previously completed two semesters of online courses. He says they have been fun, and he has been pleased with the “excellent writing and the insightful comments about literature that the students have made.”

Courses run from Monday, January 16, to Friday, April 28, 2017.

To register, use the form below.

Note: These are courses, not classes; students access the material on their own schedule.

NEW: Grammar, Level 1

Students explore the basics of English grammar in Grammar Island. This introductory grammar program introduces in a child-friendly and simple way the parts of speech, parts of sentences, phrases, and clauses. $280 for each child

NEW: Vocabulary, Level 5

Students delve into the complex, demanding, and oft-times witty The Word Within the Word I. This is a two-semester course. Michael and the students will do the first half of Word I this spring. The second half will be offered in the summer of 2017 and again in the spring of 2018. For each semester, each child: $300

Each of the literature trilogy courses is available at two levels.

At the Basic Level, students will have weekly assignments and will be able to interact each week with Michael Clay Thompson. $100

At the Assessed Level, students will be able to submit up to three papers chosen from topics set by Michael. Michael will assess the papers and provide comments, suggestions, corrections, and encouragement. $280

Besides a series of questions each week, Michael will provide a recording of him reading from the week’s assigned text, as well as maps and other illustrative material to help the students understand the context of the novels.

This course is based on the Mud Trilogy by Michael Clay Thompson: The Rescue at Fragment Crag, The Red Tide, and The Green-Face Virus. Michael guides the students through the novels and introduces them to the fundamentals of studying literature. Part of the great fun of this level is listening to Michael read passages from his novels.

This course is based on the Alice, Peter, and Mole Trilogy, comprised of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, Peter Pan by James M. Barrie, and The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame.

This course is based on the Search Trilogy, which is comprised of Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, The Call of the Wild by Jack London, and The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells.

This course is based on the Shadow Trilogy, which is comprised of The Murders in the Rue Morgue by Edgar Allen Poe, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, and The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle.  Because of the genre, it is sometimes easy for students to overlook the quality of the writing in these pieces of fiction.

Writing Assessment Service
