Royal Fireworks Press is excited to reintroduce the Problemoids mathematical reasoning books for children in grades 4, 5, and 6! These books give children an opportunity to put on their thinking caps to try to figure out the solutions to challenging problems in mathematics, mathematical reasoning, and basic logic. The books emphasize problem-solving strategies that can be applied in a wide variety of contexts, making the learning less about math and more about problem-solving in general.

Each student book, called Math Challenge, contains questions with hints that offer strategies for solving the problem, although most of the problems can be solved in more than one way, and children are encouraged to use the strategies that work best for them. Most of the problems involve mathematical operations that are appropriate for the grade level of the book (noted in each book’s title), but some of the problems require kids to stretch their minds to find solutions that involve logical inferences or deductions, and some of them are downright tricky, keeping kids on their toes as they search for a way in which to solve them. The hints, however, will keep children from floundering as they search for a solution, giving them the support they need in order to succeed.

For each of the student books, there is an instructor manual, called Math Mentor. The instructor manuals contain answers and explanations for the problems in the student books, as well as a detailed introductory section to help instructors guide children at a variety of ability levels to get the most out of the program.

Children who need support will have it through the hints, enabling them to find success with their work. Children who don’t need support will rejoice in the satisfaction of finding solutions without using the hints or finding solutions in ways different from those pointed toward by the hints. Either way, children will both struggle and succeed as they work through the book—the optimal combination for true learning. Problemoids provides excellent practice for real-world problem-solving!
