Architecture: A Beginner’s Guide

Walter Gale House

How good is your child’s urban environmental literacy? Can he or she read a building? Does he or she know the difference between good and bad architecture? Can he or she read the built environment?

Too many children do not understand the architecture around them, do not look at it critically, and cannot read it. On the other hand, the children who understand architecture are able to learn new things every day. Their awareness and understanding increase in ways that are emotionally and intellectually important. As they become smarter, they also gain a comprehension of their surroundings that creates a level of confidence.

Architecture surrounds us, and yet we fail to teach our children about it—how to read it, how to understand it, what its traditions and conventions are, how it relates to our history and our democracy, its place in controlling our actions and shaping our assumptions, and its ability to contribute to our happiness or impede our comfort.

Royal Fireworks is offering an online course taught by Francis Wickham, a distinguished architect who for forty-five years was a principal at the firm of Prentice & Chan, Ohlhausen in New York City after he left I.M. Pei. He has designed buildings that were built around the world, and his theoretical understanding and historical knowledge match his practical experience. He will lead the students through an understanding of architecture, as well as an awareness of its history, from Stonehenge, Circleville, and the Andes markings to the present and such figures as Frank Gehry and Rem Koolhaas.

On the schedule are:

Egyptian Pyramids, Middle-East Tombs, pre-Hispanic Mexico
Ancient Greek, Crete, and Asia
Ancient Rome
Gothic/China and Japan
Romanesque
Beaux Arts
Louis Sullivan
Frank Lloyd Wright
Bauhaus, Gaudi, Gropius
le Corbusier
Rockefeller Center
I.M. Pei, Louis Kahn, Paul Rudolph
Moshe Safdie, Zaza Hadid
Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas

This is a unique opportunity for your child to learn from one of the great experts of architecture.
