Essay Writing the MCT Way
|Term||Summer Session 2021|
|Ages||10 & up|
|Instructor||Michael Clay Thompson|
This course will focus on academic writing, the kind of writing required for academic success in advanced courses at the upper elementary school, middle school, high school, and university levels. Students will use the MLA method, the formal writing method of the Modern Language Association. MLA is the most widely used academic writing format in the world. Students will write two papers. The topics will be given by Michael, but students will have choice in their selections. Michael will conduct detailed instruction of the writing and MLA method in the weeks before the papers are due.
In writing these research papers, students will not be allowed simply to google and find anonymous, commercial websites as sources. These will be academic papers with documented quotations. Students will need respectable sources with authors’ names to include in their documentation and Works Cited.
The papers will be closely evaluated by Michael, but there will not be grades given; the feedback will be positive and instructive and will be designed to move the students’ academic writing forward. Michael will return the papers with comments and proofreading marks, as well as explanations of the elements of academic writing.
Let’s learn how to do this.
Live Classes: Tuesdays, 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time, from June 8th to July 27th. Students unable to attend a live class will be able to access a recording of the class.
