MCT Language Arts Level 2 – Town Level
This is the second half of a two-semester course that began in Fall 2020.
In the second level of the MCT language arts curriculum, Michael Clay Thompson takes children into Paragraph Town, where two ducks, Fishmeal and Queequack, explore the art of organizing their writing. Grammar Town introduces children to the building blocks of the English language within the context of a town. Expanding further, students are introduced in the vocabulary strand to the ancient world of Caesar and the contributions of the Romans to the English language. Caesar’s English I is not only a sophisticated vocabulary book but also a broad introduction to many aspects of Roman history, culture, and ingenuity. Beyond the essays by Michael and others, students who take this year-long course will get a rich array of images of the Roman world—far beyond what is available in the books. Roman architecture is reinforced in the poetics book for this level, Building Poems. This level is considerably more sophisticated than the first level, and Michael Clay Thompson is the ideal instructor to help your child navigate the challenges of learning the language arts.
During the second semester, Michael will add the Alice, Peter, and Mole Trilogy of literary novels to the curriculum.
Live Classes: Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m. OR Thursdays at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time (students can choose which day works best for them each week). The semester begins the week of January 11th and ends the week of May 10th. There will not be a live class every week. The core of the course is the assignments and the extensive feedback given by Michael, with the live class being a voluntary enrichment for students who are able to attend. Students’ attendance of the live classes has no effect on their grades. Students unable to attend a live class will be able to access a recording of the class.
Student Expectations: Students must be able to do assignments using a keyboard (no handwritten assignments).
Student Support: Michael is available via email.
Feedback/Assessment: Michael may reply to students’ answers with comments or questions, and he will want them to answer those emails.
Materials/Supplies: Students will need the Level 2 texts: Grammar Town, Caesar’s English I CEE, Paragraph Town, Building Poems, and Practice Town, as well as the Alice, Peter, and Mole Trilogy novels: Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and The Wind in the Willows. Students will need to have an email account and access to a computer with audio and video capabilities.
