This is the second half of a two-semester course that began in Fall 2020.
In this course students will learn communicative aspects of the Spanish language that will allow them to express their thoughts and needs. Spoken by 400 million native speakers in Spain, Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean, Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world (Mandarin Chinese is first). People who speak Spanish share a perspective of the world that is reflected in the words and word order they use to express their ideas and emotions.
The main objective of this course is for students to acquire a beginning level of communication in Spanish. This elementary level of language learning will allow them to understand a native speaker of Spanish in short conversations and learn basic vocabulary to make themselves understood in everyday life. In order to embark on this language-learning adventure, students will need to study the vocabulary, grammar, history, and culture that will assure their success. This class will be conducted in Spanish most of the time. In the first class, students will learn to say the basic questions in order to ask for clarification or to expand on new concepts presented. All instructions, exercises, and comments will be presented first in Spanish and later in English (although students may request additional information in English any time they want).
Live Classes: Tuesdays, 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time, from January 12th to May 11th. Students must attend the live classes.
Student Expectations: Each week there will be a recording of new vocabulary words, phrases, and expressions. Students should listen, repeat, and practice for twenty minutes every day. Sometimes there will be a song or a refrain to learn. After the third week, students will be encouraged to listen to additional recordings of short stories, selections, and poems. Students will submit weekly assignments, complete unit quizzes, and work with dialogues and class exercises.

Feedback/Assessment: Feedback will be provided on assignments, quizzes, and classwork.
Materials: All necessary reading and study materials will be provided and posted online. Students must have a good Spanish-English dictionary, a class notebook, 3×5-inch index cards, drawing paper, and pencils.
