Spanish V: Independent Study

In this course, students must select a topic of study for each of the two semesters. Sample topics include:
- John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, and Mysticism in Spanish Literature
- Spanish Golden Age Drama
- Cervantes’s Don Quixote
- Latin American Women Writers of the 19th Century
- Gabriel García Márquez and A Hundred Years of Solitude
- Spain in the U.S.: The Language and Culture of Spain in U.S. History
Requests for independent study, selection of the research topics, and selection of reading materials must be discussed with the instructor first, and a one-page written proposal must be submitted before students register. Please contact Dr. Myriam Borges Thompson to begin this process.
Live Classes: Mondays, 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. This course begins the week of September 13th, with the semester ending the week of December 13th. Spring semester 2022 begins the week of January 10th and ends the week of May 9th.
Student Expectations: Students will submit one paper per semester. In addition, students must maintain regular communication with the instructor and attend online meetings as agreed upon in advance.
Student Support: The instructor is available via email.
Feedback/Assessment: Feedback will be provided on the papers.
Materials: All necessary materials will be determined depending on the selected topic of study. After an initial meeting and approval of the independent study proposal, the instructor will provide the student with a list of recommended reading materials, research, articles, and video links.
Prerequisites: Students must have completed either of the two advanced-level Spanish IV courses or its equivalent as determined by an interview with the course instructor.
