Rachel McAnallen, Ph.D. (Author) · Carol Ann Williams (Author) · Christopher Tice (Illustrator)

The Awesum Alex books present math concepts to children within the context of a story about children who learn in a fun and magical classroom with a teacher who is just as excited to share what the children are discovering. The characters question the procedures that are taught in the regular classroom and come to enjoy and understand the concepts that underlie mathematics. For many, this may be the means to a true understanding of math for the first time.

Description

The Awesum Alex books present math concepts to children within the context of a story about children who learn in a fun and magical classroom with a teacher who is just as excited to share what the children are discovering. The characters, brilliantly illustrated by Christopher Tice, question the procedures that are taught in the regular classroom and come to enjoy and understand the concepts that underlie mathematics. Through this process, they learn the “why” of mathematics, not just the “how.” For many, these explanations of math concepts may be the means to a true understanding of math for the first time.

Author Dr. Rachel McAnallen has devoted her life to sharing the joy and beauty of mathematics with learners of all ages.  She explains:

“Having read many academic math books, many more math textbooks, and many math books directed to children, Carol and I found that none of them taught the concepts behind the procedures. We wanted to write books that could be read to an elementary learner and that would teach the mathematical concepts to both the listener and the reader. We also wanted the characters in the books to be thinkers, the teacher to be open-minded, and the students to question foolish procedures that are taught in the regular classroom. We want Alex to love math and to see it everywhere.

“We are loving Royal Fireworks Press! Their Awesum Alex series has been such a refreshing curriculum in our home! With its out-of-the-box way of teaching concepts to children, the concepts come alive in story form, making it relatable, valuable, and tangible. By not shying away from sophisticated concepts, this curriculum teaches young children rich, beefed-up education in a way that they can understand.

“Also, how about a shout out for a curriculum that is centered around a girl of color!

“Thank you, Royal Fireworks Press, for providing these resources and for all you do. This kind of curriculum is so incredibly needed!”
