Michael Clay Thompson: Grammar Program

Michael Clay Thompson: Grammar Program Series Cover

Grammar Island, Grammar Town, Grammar Voyage, and The Grammar of Literature by Michael Clay Thompson provide a comprehensible yet sophisticated introduction to grammar for children in the elementary grades. They ignore the low limits traditional at this level and include content often withheld until middle school or even high school.

The MCT secondary grammar series consists of three volumes of The Magic Lens. Each volume is beautifully designed in full color and with a layout that offers clarity for both student and instructor.

Michael has begun work on two preliminary levels of his language arts curriculum, which will come before Grammar Island. The first book, Poodle Knows What?, for children ages 6-8, is already available. It provides a delightful introduction to the eight parts of speech.

Our aim in producing these books is to clarify, simplify, and illuminate the fascinating complexity of English grammar. The texts are visually and thematically accessible and a great asset to our curriculum.

The student books are compact and intended for use in the early part of the school year so that students can benefit from the knowledge throughout the year.

Instructors should begin the language arts curriculum by teaching grammar. The first part of the year is devoted to teaching the child the four parts of grammar that comprise the whole package: parts of speech, parts of the sentence, phrases, and clauses, as well as some common English grammar, usage, and punctuation problems. This will enable the child to continue on in language arts by using that grammar when studying vocabulary, writing, and poetics.

"From a utilitarian point of view, I think grammar is an intellectual pocketknife; it is small, easily purchased, and so useful that one would not dream of being without it. Grammar is so lovely that even if it were useless, one would irresistibly explore it, as one explores chess, or architecture, or the spiral geometries of shells. It is a sort of magic aesthetic lens, through which we can view the delicate structures of ideas." – Michael Clay Thompson

For a complete overview of our language arts program, go to the Michael Clay Thompson Language Arts Curriculum page.

Our practice workbooks supplement the grammar program. These low-cost, consumable workbooks provide in-depth instruction with 100 practice sentences for four-level analysis.

All the grammar books contain Michael's four-level analysis. He explains why.

Poodle Knows What? Student Book Cover

Grammar is hard, and horrible, and miserable, and you have to know zillions of kinds of words, and you have to be a genius to get it all figured out. Right?

Poodle and Sidney would disagree with that. And What?. What?

Poodle is a chicken, and his best friend is a beagle named What?. And before you have a chance to think about that too hard, ZOOM!, in races Sidney, the fasted snail you ever did see. (She’s in training to be a verb.)

Between the three of them, they know quite a lot about grammar, and it turns out that all of those myths about grammar being awful and complicated and hard to do are simply untrue. I’m serious.

Grammar—when you have the right chicken, the right beagle, and the right snail—is easy! There are only eight kinds of words, and they are simple to learn. Just ask What?. He’ll tell you. What?

Okay, don’t ask What?. But What? and his friends will share all of their secrets with any child who opens the pages of this introductory grammar book for young children.

Poodle Knows What? is a delightful book told in unmetered rhyme and overflowing with quirky and endearing images drawn by artist Christopher Tice and incorporating the art of Milton Kemnitz, whose work infuses many of the other books in the curriculum. On page after page, Michael plays with words and with sounds—with what language can do. And the best part is that children get to hear Michael read it himself because every spread of two pages contains a QR code that links to audio of Michael narrating the text. If you think the story is fun, wait until you hear Michael tell it.

Young children will cherish this book for its wit, its humor, its beauty, its cleverness, and—oh yes—its valuable grammar instruction, which will provide them with a solid foundation of grammar knowledge that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. Even children who have advanced beyond the primary levels will find themselves enchanted by Sidney’s enthusiasm and by the deep friendship between Poodle and What?. What?

Grammar is not hard, nor horrible, nor miserable, and you don’t have to know zillions of kinds of words, and you don’t have to be a genius to get it all figured out. Poodle knows that. He knows What?. Exactly.

Grammar Voyage is designed to build on the foundations established in Grammar Island and Grammar Town, both in terms of the four-level analysis and visually.  It reinforces the vocabulary of Caesar's English II and the poetics of A World of Poetry, as well as the spirit and intellectual demands of Essay Voyage. The ship paintings offer a beautiful counterpoint to Michael Clay Thompson's lovely color illustrations of grammar concepts.

We recommend getting both the student book and the teacher manual for Grammar Voyage, as there are too many places where the teacher manual gives away the answers to questions and exercises.

The Grammar of Literature: Student Book Cover

Michael Clay Thompson has long argued that grammar is simple and beautiful.  Once again he has proven it so with his book The Grammar of Literature.

This is the grammar component of the newest level of the MCT language arts curriculum.  What is extraordinary about the book is not only its capacity to help students figure out complicated sentences like this one but also MCT’s introduction of a new "t-model" for picturing sentences.

This t-model exquisitely showcases one of the crucial parts of MCT’s genius: his ability to render complex grammar relationships as simple but beautiful illustrations. The t-model shows clearly the importance of subjects and verbs in relation to adjectives, adverbs, and other parts of the sentence; it visually emphasizes the dichotomy between subject and predicate; it visually clarifies the distinction between action verbs and linking verbs; it provides a simple, clear, and elegant visualization of phrases, particularly of verbal phrases. Its simplification of verbals will help many children master what continues to prove daunting to many parents and teachers.

The books in this level of the MCT curriculum focus on the vocabulary, grammar, writing, and poetic techniques of the authors of the great classics of English and American literature.

The Magic Lens II is based on four-level sentence analysis—an analysis of parts of speech, parts of sentence, phrases, and clauses and which is Michael Clay Thompson's original and enormously successful approach to teaching grammar. Material and examples take advantage of Thompson’s t-model, which exquisitely showcases complex grammar relationships as simple but beautiful illustrations.

Some of the areas of study include types of pronouns (subject, object, possessive, interrogative, demonstrative, indefinite, relative, reflexive, intensive); degrees of adjectives (good, better, best); proper, verbal, and number adjectives; action, linking, and being verbs; verb tense; principal parts of the verb; subject/verb agreement; parts of sentence; types of phrases; and the four sentence structures.

Punctuation is dealt with at each level; practice is incorporated at every stage.

Grammar is an easily teachable subject because its concepts are so few and well-defined. It is the fundamental starting point for the MCT curriculum, which recommends front-loading language arts teaching with grammar. Vocabulary, writing, and poetics can be added once the students have grasped the basics: parts of speech, parts of the sentence, phrases, and clauses.

The 4Practice III workbook provides an extra 100 practice sentences for four-level analysis.
