MCT Language Arts Curriculum, Level 3, The Voyage Level

MCT Language Arts Curriculum, Level 3, The Voyage Level Series Cover

Level 3, The Voyage Level, marks a significant step in creativity and in the demands of the writing portion of the curriculum. Children progress from learning how to write paragraphs in Paragraph Town to learning how to construct essays out of those paragraphs in Essay Voyage. It is here that many children truly begin to feel the rigor of the curriculum. In Grammar Voyage, children are expected to play with grammar in contexts that include poetry. Caesar’s English II has a good deal more emphasis on creativity than its predecessor. The poetics and practice strands continue to build on the texts from Level 2, increasing the knowlege that the children are acquiring.

Grammar Voyage: Student Book Cover

Grammar Voyage is designed to build on the foundations established in Grammar Island and Grammar Town, both in terms of the four-level analysis and visually.  It reinforces the vocabulary of Caesar's English II and the poetics of A World of Poetry, as well as the spirit and intellectual demands of Essay Voyage. The ship paintings offer a beautiful counterpoint to Michael Clay Thompson's lovely color illustrations of grammar concepts.

We recommend getting both the student book and the teacher manual for Grammar Voyage, as there are too many places where the teacher manual gives away the answers to questions and exercises.

Caesar's English II: Classical Education Edition: Student Book Cover

This book follows the same formula as Caesar’s English I: Classical Education Edition; it offers twenty lessons that alternate between introducing five Latin stems that are the basis for many of our academic words and five classic words that have been identified by Michael Clay Thompson as being prominently used among the great writers of English and American literature. The book is loaded with vocabulary activities that allow students to manipulate and play with the stems and words, as well as grammar analyses, nonfiction writing samples, poetry to help students feel the Roman experience, writing exercises, math problems using Roman numerals, word searches, and much more. There is a substantial emphasis on the geography of the Roman world.

There are additional essays on the Iberian Peninsula by Myriam Borges Thompson and on Roman history by Thomas Milton Kemnitz, who took the more than 100 photographs reproduced in the volumes.

Because the book is filled with so many extra elements, it is too large to be handled easily and so is divided into two parts.

This book is printed in black and white, but there is a full color version available here.

A World of Poetry: Student Book Cover

A World of Poetry builds on the first two books in the MCT poetics program but goes even further into the details of good poetry. This volume is built on comparisons of poetic and scientific observations of nature and the world around us. As with the other poetics books, the design of this book has been meticulously attended to so that it highlights the points in the text with beautiful and interesting visuals.

Among the featured topics are alliteration, assonance, consonance, end-stopped versus enjambed lines, end rhyme, rhyme scheme, internal rhyme, eye-rhyme, near rhyme, poetic feet, iambs, trochees, dactyls, spondees, amphibrachs, amphimacers, pyrrhics, Shakespearan sonnets, Petrarchan sonnets, ballads, rime royal, limericks, haiku, similes, metaphors, personification, apostrophes, and the grammar of poetry.

There are many poems in the book that illustrate the poetic elements discussed, including ones by T.S. Eliot, Walt Whitman, Christina Rossetti, Gerard Manley Hopkins, A.E. Houseman, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Emily Dickinson, Sara Teasdale, Anne Sexton, Thomas Hardy, Edgar Allen Poe, William Butler Yeats, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Matthew Arnold, Emma Lazarus, Sylvia Plath, and Basho Matsuo.

A World of Poetry, like the poetics books that lead up to it (The Music of the Hemispheres and Building Poems) allows students to see that the common stereotypes about poetry—that it is comprised only of pretty poems for girls—are unfounded. This text can be used as a stand-alone introduction to poetry or as a foundation for more advanced study in poetics.

The book is a sine qua non for grading academic papers, a resource as useful to seasoned teachers as to homeschoolers coping with the issues for the first time.

For the past forty-plus years, Michael has graded student papers and has written detailed comments on them. According to Michael, "Treasure Island was first serialized in Young Folks magazine from 1881 to 1882 and then published in novel form in 1883. Stevenson created a world-unto-itself, with a ship’s-worth of pirates and rogues, good souls and bad. While reading Treasure Island, we feel the salt spray of the novel, hear the booming surf on the reef, and glimpse the quick wink of that smartest of pirates, Long John Silver. Jim Hawkins is a true spirit, navigating a path through the unworldly, even as circumstances become stranger and stranger. Stevenson soaks us in strong characters with vivid, rich names—rascals and thieves, lawyers and boys. From one’s first reading of Treasure Island, Long John Silver clunks into one’s inner reality with his wooden leg and his squawking parrot and his weasel words, and from that day forward, there is always an inner Long John lurking within us, ready to fool us once again."

The novel is reproduced in its entirety and includes Michael's "language illustrations"—close-ups of poetic techniques, four-level analyses of interesting grammar, and comments about writing strategies. Challenging vocabulary is defined at the bottom of each page.

Michael writes, "The Invisible Man is reminiscent of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, published in 1886, and of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, first published anonymously in 1818. These books were written at a time when science was making dramatic strides forward, challenging traditional ideas and inspiring profound ideas about what might become possible. In each novel, a scientist’s work produces a monster. Also in each novel, we see a vivid story of how science/power corrupts the individual who possesses it. Like Stevenson’s monster, H.G. Wells’s monster is a transformation of the scientist himself, and the inevitable questions arise about the price of progress and about the need for knowledge to be developed in terms that are moral and human."
