Quests and Quandaries: Exploring Intellectual Interests in Depth

Quests and Quandaries: Exploring Intellectual Interests in Depth Series Cover

Quests and Quandaries is a winner of the National Association for Gifted Children award for exemplary curriculum.

Quests and Quandaries has two overarching goals: to facilitate for students the process of discovering and exploring intellectual interests in depth using Dr. Sandra Kaplan’s Depth and Complexity Model as a framework, and to introduce various problem-solving strategies and provide opportunities for students to engage in problem solving using the Problem-Based Learning method as described by Dr. Shelagh Gallagher in Problem-Based Learning in Your Classroom.

The specific focus of the unit is for students to identify an area of intellectual interest and then develop intellectual expertise in that area. The unit is made up of 36 lessons. In its original format, the lessons form a nine-week course, but for a class that meets less frequently, they can be adapted to comprise up to a year of instruction, class activities, independent research, and project completion.

An extensive, carefully crafted teacher manual, a student logbook, and a separate student planning book make this an extremely easy unit to implement.

NAGC Curriculum Award-Winner

Quests and Quandaries is before all else a profoundly intellectual unit; it propels students toward scholarly expertise in an area of study that the student chooses. To that end, the activities are directed at introducing the students to the habits of a scholar, with the expectation that the students will adopt at least some of them. The unit aims explicitly at perseverance, at deploying multiple problem-solving strategies, and at reimagining impediments as challenges and quandaries as opportunities for development.

Dr. McIntosh is particularly resourceful in finding a wide variety of paths to entice students toward genuine scholarship. This is an extraordinary unit for its immense intellectual heft, and it well deserves its award for excellence.

There are two student workbooks for the Quests and Quandaries unit. The first is the Research Notebook and Problem Log. It provides the icons and categories used in Dr. Sandra Kaplan’s Depth and Complexity Model, as well as some of the other pages essential for the activities in this unit. The second student workbook is titled My Plan to Become a Scholar. It is a step-by-step guide to pursuing a research project and developing a product—for example, a paper, a video, a slideshow, a model, a pamphlet, a demonstration—as a result of the research. It also includes a Work Log so that students can keep regular record of their progress.
