Description

In the 1950s, Frederick Franck was working as a dentist at Dr. Albert Schweitzer’s hospital in Africa when he met a young boy named Bolo who needed to be treated at the clinic for an infection in his foot. This is Bolo’s story as imagined—and illustrated—by Franck.

When Bolo sees the wonderful work that Dr. Schweitzer and his colleagues are doing at the clinic, not just to treat the people who come there but to treat animals in need as well, he decides that he, too, wants to be a doctor. But there is much that he needs to learn—and to unlearn—in order to reach his goal. He finds a place and a set of duties at the hospital taking care of the animals, but he’s never seen a Black doctor before. Is it possible?

This short semi-biographical novel is a touching story brimming with the innocence and earnestness of childhood. It was originally published in cooperation with The Albert Schweitzer Institute for the Humanities.
