  • Instructor Kevin O'Brien
  • Code LA10-S26
  • Student Ages 11–14
  • Day Thursday
  • Time 1:00 P.M.

THIS IS A ONE-SEMESTER COURSE.

This course will feature the connection between good writing and good reading. Students will study published texts and analyze them for their content, style, and rhetorical structure. They will also learn the fundamentals of research, how to think through and clearly articulate ideas, and how both their creative and their expository writing can be improved through revision and a greater understanding of how good writing functions.

Every class meeting will also feature drills, quizzes, and games that focus on the basics: grammar, punctuation, and spelling—rudimentary tools that are essential to good writing.

Class Meetings: Thursdays, 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Dates: January 15 – May 14, 2026

Student Expectations: There will be weekly reading and writing assignments, which will be increasingly challenging as the course progresses. Students should plan on about one to three hours of homework per week.

Student Support: The instructor is available via email, as well as by phone call or text.

Feedback/Assessment: The instructor will provide detailed feedback on all submitted assignments, both in writing and during each class session.

Materials/Supplies: The instructor will provide all required texts and resources as PDFs or Google docs.
