Advanced Mathematical Concepts, Part 1 (2025-2026)
- Instructor Dr. Rachel McAnallen
- Code MTH60-25/26
- Student Ages 10–16
- Day Wednesday
- Time 1:00 P.M.
NOTE: This is intended to be the SECOND and THIRD SEMESTERS of a THREE-SEMESTER COURSE.
In this course, students will embark on a journey through the fascinating world of number patterns. They will investigate numbers in great detail through the advanced concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in bases other than 10. In addition, they will delve into primes, composites, remainders, fractions, decimals, and other mathematical phenomena.
By the end of the course, students will have both an enhanced appreciation for numbers and a new and enlightened understanding of how numbers and number patterns work, which will help bring clarity to any mathematical operations they encounter in the future.
Class Meetings: Wednesdays, 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Fall Semester: September 3 – December 17, 2025
Spring Semester: January 14 – May 13, 2026
Student Expectations: Students will be expected to arrive at the class meetings on time with their cameras turned on. In addition, they will be expected to complete an array of problems and exercises that will help them internalize what they are learning in the class meetings.
Student Support: The instructor is available via email. In addition, the instructor will remain online after class for those students who need extra help.
Feedback/Assessment: The instructor will provide feedback on student work and will help the students work through any mathematical questions they may have so that they gain a true understanding of the concepts.
Materials/Supplies: Students will need to purchase the books Introduction to Number Theory and Introduction to Number Theory Solutions Manual by Mathew Crawford, both of which are available online.
*Prerequisites: Optimally, students will already have taken the first semester of this course, which was offered in Spring 2025. However, new students may join in the Fall 2025 semester with the requirement that they be familiar and comfortable with everything up through Chapter 7 of the text for this course.
