THIS IS A TWO-SEMESTER COURSE.

This is a course that is designed for students to discover and dive deeply into the areas of creative writing that interest them most. To accomplish this, the instructor will first guide students through an exploration of writing in short fiction, drama, and poetry. The students will experience examples of each as they create their own stories and verse. After experimenting with these genres, students will choose one to focus on and will begin a project of their own invention that immerses them in the genre of their choice.

Class Meetings: Thursdays, 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Fall Semester: September 10 – December 17, 2026
Spring Semester: January 14 – May 13, 2027

Student Expectations: In-class assignments will consist primarily of brief prompts and exercises that are designed to generate creative ideas or model the techniques and tools of creative composition. Assignments outside of class will consist of longer works or collections that demonstrate the ideas and techniques discussed in class.

Student Support: The instructor is available via email.

Feedback/Assessment: The instructor will provide feedback on student work.

Materials: Students should have whatever materials they prefer to compose with. This may mean pen and paper, Google Docs, or some other word processing software.
