THIS IS A TWO-SEMESTER COURSE.
This course will help to develop students’ creative writing skills. To do this, the instructor will guide students through an exploration of methods, techniques, and theories of writing in several different genres. The students will examine examples of poetry and fiction as they create their own characters, conflicts, and dialogue. They will also study various elements of “writing theory” in order to expand their understanding of creative writing, with the ultimate goal of finding their own unique writer’s voice.
Class Meetings: Thursdays, 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Fall Semester: September 4 – December 18, 2025
Spring Semester: January 15 – May 14, 2026
Student Expectations: In-class assignments will consist primarily of brief prompts and exercises that are designed to generate creative ideas or reflect techniques and strategies in creative composition. Assignments outside of class will consist of longer works or collections that utilize the ideas and techniques discussed in class.
Student Support: The instructor is available via email.
Feedback/Assessment: The instructor will provide feedback on student work.
Materials: The text for this course is yet to be determined. However, students should bring pencils or pens and writing paper to each class meeting.
