THIS IS A TWO-SEMESTER COURSE.
Please Note: Students are required to have taken Math for Bright Young Learners, Part 1 in order to take this course.
In this math course, students will learn:
- Number fluency and flexibility
- How to convert base ten numbers to other number systems, and vice versa
- Radix points for various number systems
- Fractions, including decimal fractions
- Subtraction using negative numbers
- The distributive property of multiplication
- The reverse distributive property of division
- Prime, perfect, abundant, and deficient numbers
In addition, they will study geometric topics such as:
- The measurement of perimeter, area, and volume using two- and three-dimensional models
- Attributes of circles
- Mathematical model building
The entire course is structured as a fun learning experience to open up the wonderful world of mathematics to young children.
Class Meetings: Wednesdays, 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Fall Semester: September 9 – December 16, 2026
Spring Semester: January 13 – May 12, 2027
Student Expectations: Students will be expected to arrive at the class meetings on time with their cameras turned on. If they would like a grade for the course, then they will need to do the homework assignments and turn them in to the instructor.
Student Support: The instructor is available via email. In addition, the instructor will remain online after class for those students who need extra help.
Feedback/Assessment: The instructor will provide feedback on student work and will help the students work through any mathematical questions they may have so that they gain a true understanding of the concepts.
Materials/Supplies: Students will need the Hands-On Elementary Math Kits 1 and 2 that they used in Math for Bright Young Learners, Part 1.
Prerequisites: Students are required to have taken Math for Bright Young Learners, Part 1 in order to take this course.
