Mathematical Model Building (Jan. 15-May 14)
- Code MTH74-S26
- Student Ages 9–18
- Term Spring Semester 2026
- Day Thursday
- Time 5:00 P.M.
THIS IS A ONE-SEMESTER COURSE.
Using construction paper or card stock, students will construct an array of three-dimensional models. Not only will this enable them to build beautiful and fascinating objects; it’s also a wonderful way to learn solid geometry. It is imperative for students to understand that math is more than just numbers, and using this kind of spatial problem-solving to construct a variety of polyhedra will give them a huge advantage as they progress along their mathematical journey.
This is an interactive course, designed for kids who like working with their hands and “making stuff.”
Class Meetings: Thursdays, 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Dates: January 15 – May 14, 2026
Student Expectations: Students will need the three P’s in order to complete the models: patience, persistence, and perseverance. In addition, they will be required to arrive to the class meetings on time with their cameras turned on so that the instructor can view their work. If they want a grade, they will need to complete the homework assignments and email them to the instructor.
Student Support: The instructor is available via email. In addition, the instructor will remain online after class for those students who need extra help.
Feedback/Assessment: The instructor will provide feedback on all student work.
Materials/Supplies: Students will need the following materials in order to participate in this course:
– A straightedge or ruler
