The Making of Modern Fashion Workshop (Aug. 11-13)

  • Instructor Ellary Eddy
  • Code ART95W
  • Student Ages 12–18
  • Term Fall Workshops 2026
  • Day Tuesday–Thursday
  • Time 7:00 P.M.

Meet three fashion visionaries: the sculptor, the punk, and the surfer. This workshop explores how Rei Kawakubo, Vivienne Westwood, and Shawn Stüssy kickstarted a new wave in the history of fashion.

Students will learn how the work of these three designers, all starting out in the late 70s and early 80s, spawned a global presence that has become the predominant influence in today’s style. The workshop will start with a quick flashback through history to highlight a few transformative designers. Students will then consider more recent designers who have followed in the three’s footsteps and continue to invent along the same vein.

Japan’s Kawakubo created Comme des Garçons, now a major international brand, Britain’s Westwood transformed her small storefront into an established musical genre, and Stüssy, the ultimate American entrepreneur, turned the sport of surfing into a lifestyle brand so viral that it affected the old guard from Gucci to Vuitton—so fresh that even they wanted a taste!

Class Meetings: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Dates: August 11th, 12th, 13th
