The philosophy of biology examines the conceptual foundations of the life sciences. This course will focus on Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. The instructor will explain how the theory works and apply it to various dimensions of human life.

Students will read The Missing Link, an intriguing novel designed to highlight controversial issues raised by the theory of evolution. They will also examine selections from prominent philosophers that will enable them to think deeply and critically about the role that biology plays in shaping society.

Class Meetings: Wednesdays, 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Dates: June 3 – July 29

Student Expectations: Each week the students will read a section of the novel on which this course is based, as well as the guidebook that accompanies it. In addition, they will complete weekly discussion questions and write three essays.

Student Support: The instructor is available via email.

Feedback/Assessment: The instructor will discuss student answers to the assigned discussion questions each week in class and will provide written feedback on each essay.

Materials/Supplies: Students will need to purchase the philosophy novel The Missing Link and the accompanying guidebook (in press, but available from Royal Fireworks prior to the start of the course).
