Agency in the Anthropocene: Advanced Climate Change Studies (2025-2026)
- Instructor Edith Katz
- Code ENV76-25/26
- Student Ages 10–15
- Day Tuesday
- Time 7:00 P.M.
THIS IS A TWO-SEMESTER COURSE.
This course will take the study of climate change into advocacy, application, and initiatives. Students will learn about age-appropriate groups that they can participate in for their climate change activities. Climate change science, impacts, and solutions fuse in the study of environmental design that promotes low-carbon alternatives as applied to students’ own cities or neighborhoods using a computer program called Climate Positive Design.
A special focus of the course will be a review of the many career opportunities emerging to repair and restore the environment and the climate. To increase skills in climate communication and advocacy, the students will create a class climate newsletter every month.
Class Meetings: Tuesdays, 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Fall Semester: September 2 – December 16, 2025
Spring Semester: January 13 – May 12, 2026
Student Expectations: Students will be expected to do required readings during the week in preparation for the class meetings, to participate in class discussions, to write articles for the class climate newsletter, to do occasional assignments on individual research topics, and to prepare a final project and present it to the class.
Student Support: The instructor is available via email.
Feedback/Assessment: The instructor will comment on the students’ assignments and will provide grades with feedback on their work during the course of the semester.
Materials/Supplies: None
Prerequisites: This is an advanced-level course that requires prior understanding of the science, impacts, and solutions of climate change. Optimally, students will have taken the course “Exploring Climate Change” before enrolling in this course, but all students are welcome as long as they can demonstrate familiarity with the topic.
