Books for Developing Self-Awareness and Mindfulness in Young Gifted Children

As adults, we are often mesmerized by how much gifted children can learn and how much they already know—so much so that we sometimes focus almost exclusively on these children's cognitive development, leaving little time and thought to the development of their self-awareness. This is not the best prescription for gifted children, who are prone to intensities, sensitivities, and asynchrony well beyond the norms for their less gifted peers. At Royal Fireworks Press, we want to nurture the whole child. Intellectual challenge and development is important, but so is the development of children's personal and emotional self-awareness. Accordingly, we offer a range of books to help gifted children develop self-awareness and sharpen the tools for dealing with their personal world in the hopes that we can aid them in finding the smoothest path possible as they mature. We are concerned that they understand their bodies and their minds, that they have insight into the behaviors of their peers as well as into their own inclinations, and that they have the tools to make thoughtful, informed personal decisions.

Gifted children are more than just exceptionally bright; they are often keenly sensitive and intuitive, and they generally are eager to understand themselves at a level that far exceeds that of their age peers. Giving them resources to facilitate that understanding and the tools to help them moderate their often-intense emotions and reactions can help them to become happier, more well-adjusted, and more socially adept, which can transform both how they see the world and how the world sees them.

In addition to the books listed below, we also offer a series of books designed specifically for children who experience one or more of the five intensities commonly associated with giftedness. The Cheetah Stories offer young gifted kids ideas about how to channel their intense passions and emotions productively, but without the burden of feeling as though something is wrong with them.

We also have a series of books that foster creative problem solving called What To Do? These books present dilemmas that children must work through using critical thinking and ethical decision making because there are no right or wrong answers. The scenarios promote thoughtful discussion and Socratic dialogue to reach a solution.

We are equally concerned that gifted children have access to challenging intellectual content, and we offer a number of books to stimulate these children's brains intellectually and academically, enabling them to continue pushing forward in their drive to learn and know more. Click here for a list of those books.

The Intenso Family Goes to a New School Cover

The Intenso family has just moved to a new city, and the five children are anxious about their first day at school. They each represent one of the five intensities—also known as overexcitabilities—that are common among gifted children, and they display their hopes and fears in five very different ways. Children who have one or more of the overexcitabilities will recognize themselves in the characters and will learn strategies to help alleviate some of the problems associated with having such intense feelings.

The Intensos march bravely into their new school, where they meet their new teacher. She explains to them that she understands how they feel and that she will do everything she can to make their experience exciting and rewarding. The quintuplets are reassured and enter their new classroom together with the confidence that comes from being accepted as they are.

The Epic Journey of an Orange Cover

Most of us eat without thinking much about it. In fact, we're usually doing something else at the same time, such as watching TV or reading or playing on our phones. Eating mindfully enables us to become more aware of the food that nurtures us, and it allows us to appreciate, not just the food itself, but the time and effort that so many people put forth in order to get that food to us. A simple snack such as an orange is not in fact simple at all when children learn the extraordinary journey that it made to go from a seed to a tree to a fruit, then from an orange grove to a truck to a distribution factory to a grocery store and more. A surprising number of people are involved in every stage of the orange's journey. When children know that, when they appreciate all that is involved, they can spend some time enjoying their food, exploring its tastes and textures—and, not unimportantly, how it makes them feel after they've eaten it. Mindful eating offers benefits of more than just awareness and focus but also of gratitude and appreciation, which all of us—not just our children—could use a little more of.
