By exploring visual storytelling across cultures and time periods, students develop strong visual literacy and analytical thinking skills while making meaningful connections between art, history, and technology. Through a combination of discussion, writing, and creative work, they learn to interpret and evaluate visual media thoughtfully, building the kind of critical thinking and communication skills that support success in advanced humanities studies and beyond.

Instructor Michael Allen brings a dynamic background to the classroom, with experience ranging from work with Nickelodeon and the Cartoon Network to teaching at the Columbia University School of Professional Studies. His career spans graphic design, photography, and animation, enabling him to give students a rare inside look at both the history and the current professional world of visual storytelling.
